Bank In Action: Building a financially literate young generation

HSBC Indonesia, in collaboration with Junior Achievement Indonesia, ran the Bank In Action program as part of its financial literacy enhancement measures amongst the younger generation. Bank in Action was an innovative educational program designed to enhance financial literacy among junior high school students in Jakarta, Tangerang, and Depok.

The program had a key objective, which was to share in-depth understanding of banking principles through interactive activities designed to challenge students to face real banking scenarios. The program’s other objective was for the students to recognise their societal roles and responsibilities while building smart consumption habits through personal financial management.

Bank in Action collaborated with schools to organise educational programs to ensure the program runs smoothly, from socialisation to school principals to teacher training sessions. In class sessions, students learned various subjects, from banking history and services to short- and long-term fund management. Students were invited to explore careers in banking and were taught about the importance of investing. At the end of the session, students participated in the “Bank of Choice” competition, where they strategically used their creativity to apply the learned concepts.

The top two of ten participating teams from each school were invited to a designated HSBC office. During the visits, they also participated in a competition and presented their ideas to a panel of judges while gaining first-hand experience of the real banking world.

Bank in Action has had a tangible impact on the 200 participating students. A survey conducted to evaluate the program showed that 84 per cent of students already grasped more than 20 per cent of financial concepts. In addition, 40 finalist students from four participating schools in the “Bank of Choice” competition came up with creative, award-worthy solutions at events such as Most Innovative Idea.

The program also engaged HSBC Indonesia volunteering employees as mentors in group discussion sessions and online guidance. The volunteers gave their insights and support to the participants, enriching their learning experience with a professional perspective.

HSBC Indonesia believes that financial literacy is a key foundation for a sustainable future. Through Bank in Action, not only does HSBC Indonesia teach banking principles but also builds strategic thinking, leadership, and personal financial management skills that Indonesia’s young generation will regard as valuable assets.
