Watch the 3rd episode of Philantopedia podcast on demystifying decarbonization
This podcast episode covers a lot of ground, from understanding what industrial decarbonization is, to why it’s so challenging but necessary, who’s responsible, what we can do as consumers, and finally, getting clarity on the available clean energy solutions for the industry.

Bringing clean energy closer to the industry
This article highlights on Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) and Green Energy as a Solution (GEaaS) which offer practical solutions for clean energy needs for the industrial sector.
Have you considered switching from a gas-fuelled car to an electric vehicle, but were put off by the relatively high price and limited charging infrastructure? The same reluctant may be felt by industrial players who want to transition to clean energy, but face barriers related to cost, access, and supply.
If owning an electric car feels out of reach, one way to still experience the benefits it offers is by using an electric vehicle-based ride-sharing service. The same logic now applies to industries that want to switch to clean energy.
Industries no longer must make massive investments to build their own renewable energy plants. More affordable solutions are emerging through new business models like Energy Service Company (ESCO). Through this approach, energy technology providers help industries adopt low-carbon solutions without the burden of huge upfront capital. For example, solar panels can be installed with a monthly rental system, providing the added benefit of lower electricity costs.
Development of green business model plays a key role in encouraging the adoption of clean energy for the industry.
Additionally, the State-owned Electricity Company, Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) has introduced schemes such as Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and Green Energy as a Service (GEaaS). These programs allow companies to ‘subscribe’ to green energy and ensure they are genuinely using clean electricity.
Through the REC scheme, companies can purchase green certificates that prove their participation in using verified green electricity. The REC service is becoming increasingly popular. According to PLN’s official website, as of 2024, 7,354 customers had acquired REC, a 117% increase from the previous year’s 3,378 customers.
However, the needs of industry don’t stop at just certificates. Many want to be sure they are truly consuming clean electricity. This is where the GEaaS innovation comes in – a green electricity subscription scheme from PLN. The GEaaS sources electricity from new and renewable energy plants, ensuring that the green energy needs of the industrial sector are met.
Implementation of green electricity supply help realizing a sustainable industry.
This model overcomes the barriers posed by high upfront costs and limited space for renewable energy infrastructure. Industries can immediately reduce their carbon emissions while enjoying cost efficiencies from using more environmentally friendly energy.
The transition to clean energy is a tangible step that is not only relevant for large industries but also for every business and society at large. Now, the choice is in our hands, will we be just spectators or will we contribute to the journey towards a low-carbon future? It is time to work together and leverage the available solutions—from renting renewable energy equipment to using REC and GEaaS, to create a greener, more sustainable change.
