Creating positive impact through sustainable green technology and innovations

As part of the efforts towards sustainability and climate change mitigation, HSBC Indonesia – in collaboration with EcoXYZtem and Greeneration – launched Climate Innovation Acceleration (CIA), a program that aims to encourage young Indonesian entrepreneurs to create technology-based solutions to climate challenges. Through a holistic approach, the program supports Indonesia’s Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (ENDC) target by 2030 with its climate-technology-based sustainable economic development.

By providing training, mentorship, and networking opportunities, the CIA aims to foster climate awareness among the younger generation and equip them with the necessary skills needed to create a positive impact through green innovation. Through this program, HSBC Indonesia supports the creation of green jobs and sustainable technology solutions in various sectors, which is in line with Indonesia's sustainability measures to achieve its greenhouse gas emission reduction target by 2030.

The program involved 31 startups, consisting of 15 early-stage startups and 16 startups from high school and university levels. In addition, more than 3,000 individuals participated in roadshows, talk shows, and other activities held in seven major cities: Medan, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Bali, Makassar, Bandung, and Jakarta. These activities were designed to raise awareness of the importance of climate innovation and to introduce various technological solutions that can reduce the impact of climate change.

CIA also carried out several important activities, such as mentorship, sharing sessions with industry experts, and competitions that gave early-stage startups and universities the opportunity to present their ideas and solutions. One of the highlights of this program was the Demo Day, where participants presented their projects in front of a panel of judges and had the opportunity to communicate with venture capitalists and strategic partners.

In addition to providing technical training, the CIA program also supported the creation of significant social and environmental impacts. Through various pilot projects of participants, this program has succeeded in reducing CO₂ emissions, managing waste, and contributing to achieving Indonesia’s sustainability goals. As a result, not only did CIA participants gain entrepreneurial skills and climate knowledge, but they also helped strengthen Indonesia’s sustainability-oriented entrepreneurial ecosystem.

On the environmental front, CIA launched 20 sustainability-focused pilot projects, including seven projects that engaged 70 high school and university community members to manage 13,558 tons of CO₂ and process more than 188 kg of waste. For early-stage startups, the program supported 20 projects that reached out to 1,115 people, managed 528.03 kg of CO₂, and processed 215.77 kg of waste. On the social front, the program empowered 30 startup teams with entrepreneurial skills, reaching out to more than 3,000 participants in seven cities through roadshows and talk shows.

Climate Innovation Week 2024: Driving innovation in addressing climate change challenges

The program’s success lies not only in its impact on participants but also in the engagement of 70 community partners and academics. Collaboration with the government and private sector has paved the way for the expansion of similar initiatives in the future, thus accelerating Indonesia’s transition to a greener and more sustainable economy. With more than 2,900 participating in the Climate Innovation Week summit, the program showed that people from all walks of life accept and even apply innovative climate solutions.
